What does it mean to become a designer and how does one do it?

Becoming a professional of any career is a lengthy and difficult process, and for designers, it becomes even more confusing. With increased access to resources for many young designers, this begs the question: What is the right way to become a designer? Does one have to go to school? Are some just born with it? Is education even accesssible for most people?
